Happy Birthday Baby Boy!

Birthdays are funny things when your children are grown. They still carry the same joy and wonder they did when our little ones were blowing out candles over a mess of frosting, but they also bring a quiet feeling that I can't quite name...an awareness of  how quickly the years slip through our fingers.

Today, my baby boy celebrates another year of life. And while I am endlessly proud of the man he is becoming, my heart can’t help but drift back to the days when his hands were small enough to wrap around just one of my fingers, when his laughter filled the house in that carefree, boyish way that only childhood allows.

There is such sweetness in watching him grow into himself...seeing his confidence, his choices, and his passions take shape. But there is also a pang of longing for the days that feel like they ended too soon: the ball games, the school mornings, the nights he wanted to talk for hours starting at 11:00 PM.

That’s the bittersweet truth of motherhood. We raise our children to be independent, strong, and capable, yet we can’t help but miss the days when they needed us for everything. A birthday, especially, is a reminder of both, the celebration of who they are now and the memory of who they once were.

So today, I celebrate my son with all the love and pride my heart can hold. I also quietly honor the little baby who made his depute today, all those years ago, who still lives in every smile, every hug, and every memory.

Happy birthday, my baby boy. No matter how many years pass, you’ll always carry that title with me.

A Very, Very, Very belated Birthday Wish....

How can my baby boy be 18?  How could I have not blogged it about it even in the month it happened?  It just seems time is flying by and I am trying my best to catch a moment or two of these memories.  In early September my dear son managed to turn 18 on the same day Hurricane Dorien decided to come for a visit.  Needless to say it kind of changed our plans for the day but...it did not keep us from celebrating with the traditional Birthday Fancy Pie - oh, and he got his birthday off from school!

I just want to say that this young man amazes me with this wit, sharp mind and kind heart regularly.  He loves me but not near as much as I love him.  He and I have been through a lot together, shared more laughs that I can count, lots of adventures and even some tears but I am grateful for every moment together.  I am blessed. Happy belated birthday to my heart; may all your wishes and dreams come true!

Happy Birthday, Baby Girl!

My daughter (my baby girl!) had a birthday so my youngest son and I spent the weekend with her and her husband to celebrate.
Of course, we came bearing her favorite cake, Raspberry Elegance.  It is one of my favorites as well.  She loves it so much her wedding cake was a bigger, more beautiful version of it!  Notice the candles?  That is what you get when the 16-year-old baby brother is in charge of putting them on the cake!  No, she isn't 62!

One of the treats we had was being able to go see my beautiful, smart, and talented daughter in action at her work. She also received some major brotherly love from the nefarious candle organizer!
The event we attended was sponsored by the hospital where my daughter works.  The day was kind of an end of the season/fall festival event which wrapped up with a showing of Beauty and the Beast during  "movie on the lawn night." It was fun to see my girl do her thing and see the results of her hard work.  Can you tell I am a little bit proud of her?

The best way to describe what her birthday means to me is to say the day she was born, I changed...she made me a better person. She made me a Mom. I wouldn't trade that title or one single moment with my 3 amazing children for anything in the world.  I am blessed.

Happy Birthday, baby girl!
You are so very loved!

Happy Birthday, baby boy...

How can I remember this day, buying this outfit and that sweet, soft blue blanket like it was yesterday? Maybe because the years seem to fly by faster and faster and I feel the shadow of adulthood all around?  This was my youngest son's 1 year photo.  We lived in New York at the time and I had a beast of a time finding anything semi-dressy.  My Southern Self was looking for something with smocking and preferably puffy pants but that was no where to be found in the New York where I was.  My youngest always loved to rub your ear (or his if no one was available)...if you sat next to him on the sofa or rocked him at night he would gently reach up and rub your ear lobe.  It was his connection and comfort.  I can remember seeing he and his older brother on the sofa watching TV and my youngest would be absent mindedly rubbing his brother's ear.  It was sweet, innocent and a way that I am sure bonded them together.  Today my baby boy turns 16 (at 9:09 PM to be exact) and he is at rehearsals for Beauty and the Beast, being produced by a local theater company. Before that he rushed home to get his new basketball and basketball shoes and was off to the Y before heading to rehearsals.  He is my renaissance man. I am excited to see the young man he is becoming.

But, I look at this face and I wonder...where did the time go?  Where did my little man go?  In his place stands an almost 6 foot tall amazement.  Today is bittersweet.  I am so thankful and happy for all he has done and is becoming but I miss that sweet baby in my arms.

I prayed for this child, and the LORD has granted me what I asked of him.
1 Samuel 1:27 (NIV)

Happy Birthday!

Today is the day....the day that my first born baby boy turns 18.  I just can't believe it.  Though, to look at him he looks like a man, he has taken on the responsibilities of a man in many areas of life but I can still see that sweet, innocent baby boy in his eyes if I look quick enough.  I am proud of this young man and I know that God has big things planned for him.  He is becoming a real man, a rock that can also be a soft place to land.  I am blessed to have him in my life and my family.  I never knew 18 years ago what he would come to mean to our family years later...but God knew.  I love this sweet man.

Happy 16, Baby Boy!

How did it happen?
When did I close my eyes and a handsome young man took the place of my baby boy?
I can't believe that 16 years have flown by in the blink of an eye.  I feel I have missed so much and you are now wanting to fly...all I want to do is slow time down so I can keep you close.  I want to protect you from heart break and keep you safe.  I want life to bring you only blessings and joy.  I pray for you daily, that you will walk with God  and seek His will above all others.

When I look up to the baby boy that now towers over me in the body of a young man, I am stunned that we are 16 years down the path.  I was surprised when he came into this world ahead of schedule and he has continued to surprise me in so many ways, with the the depth of his intelligence, talents, kindness.  He surprises me daily with a sense of humor I could have never even fathomed out of anyone.  A recent surprise is how protective he has become of me and his siblings as he grows from boy to man.  He is a wonderful, caring and responsible young man and I am so blessed to share in his life.

Happy 16th Birthday, my sweet baby boy.

But he said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!”

Happy Birthday!

Yesterday was a big day around here! It started off bright and early at the DMV.  You see my oldest son (DS1) had one of those milestone birthdays that opens up a whole new world for him... and us (yep...us.)  He is now the proud owner of a Beginner Drivers Permit.  Boy...it just seems like yesterday he was cruising around the yard in his Power Wheels jeep.  If we could only figure out a way to keep him in the yard now....

This birthday feels pretty special to me in a unique way, because this brave young man saved his little brother's life last week.  I am not sure that is something a lot of 15 year olds have experienced, but he has.  Last night when we went out for a special Birthday dinner celebration I couldn't help but be extra thankful for the wonderful faces around that table.

Happy Birthday to my sweet boy! I am so honored and proud to be his Mom.

Happy Birthday, Baby Girl!

Can it be that 20 years have passed?  I can't believe my baby girl turns 20 today.  It is strange to think she is an adult.  She has grown into a wonderful young lady, one that I am so proud to call my daughter.  I cherish this girl!

A daughter is the happy memories of the past,
the joyful moments of the present,
and the hope and promise of the future.

10 is the magical number...

My baby boy is 10 today.  He is in those all coveted double digits.  He wanted an Ipod for his birthday...what happened to wanting little cars and such?  I can't believe my youngest child is 10.

I love this little man so very much.  He is light and joy and fun rolled into one.  He is my child that fully loves life and wraps it in a sweet, compassionate spirit that I so desperately want to preserve.  It gets harder as they age to protect them and keep their spirits in tact. That is why I always feel a bit sad at each passing birthday, knowing they are that much closer to life outside the protective confines of home.

My wish for my sweet, youngest is that he always love life as much as he does now and he continues to grow into a man after God's own heart.

My Birthday Boy!

It is hard to believe this adorable little guy has up and become a full fledged big boy.
He informed me on the way to school, that he is exactly 2 years from getting his permanent drivers license. Great.

Happy Birthday, my sweet boy!
You are loved more than you could ever know.

Happy Birthday, Baby Girl!

Today, my baby girl turns 19.

I can’t believe how these years continue to fly by at a break-neck pace.

Today is such a reminder of how life ebbs and flows and seasons change. You see, this is the first birthday that we have spent apart from one another…in 19 years. She is away at school and I am sure enjoying her day, but I still miss her being here and all the fun birthdays are (even though we celebrated last weekend with her). Rather than beginning the birthday celebration at breakfast this morning, I sent her a text message. It is a new season, it is a good season, but sometimes I really miss the old season!

“That day, the day you were born, was the most exhilarating day of my life. Ask me how I spent the morning, ask who came to call, ask me anything about that day and I’ll know. Every detail. Most of all I remember how beautiful you looked. I was so proud of you and me. I should have been filled with doubts about whether I could do right by you but, on the contrary, I knew I was ready! I had a plan. I would love you too much; I would protect you for a while; I would teach you how to fly on your own. You might leave my nest, my daughter, but if I did my job well you’d be back, as my friend.”

Happy Birthday!

Today my sweet baby boy is 9 years old.

DS2 is such a light in my life.  He is a child that likes everyone & everything. He is compassionate and loves animals so much. He is full of life and personality and keeps me on my toes.

Although he is the youngest of three, he definitely is his own person.  I am so blessed to share life with such a wonderful little man.

Happy Birthday, sweet baby boy!

13!

Yep, we now have 2 teenagers in our house. DS1 morphed into a teenager over night. I can't believe it. I found myself looking at him, now that he is getting taller than I am, and wondering what the next season of his life will bring him and our family. On his birthday, he and I took some rare Mom/Son time and went to see a great movie, The Blind Side (if you haven't seen it GO, GO, GO!). I hope that I can learn to be a good mom to a young man and we can navigate the challenges ahead with God as our guide. I can't begin to express what a blessing he has been to me. He has stretched my life and shown me a side of God I never knew. I am so blessed.

My DS1 is a wonderful young man with a sensitive spirit that I think he battles hiding in this world. I am proud of him and hope that he never loses his concern for others. I love this young man so much (young man....wow).

Happy, Happy Birthday

18
I have been melancholy the last few days, wondering where the time has gone. Today may be the last time she sits at my table for breakfast on her birthday. She is charting a course away from us and though we support her an are proud of her, I can't imagine her not being here. Just yesterday I sat at the mall eating lunch and watched a Mother with a small daughter riding the Merry Go Round. I wanted to catch her sleeve and say breathe it all in, grab every moment, because sooner than you can imagine you will be me.
We mothers are learning to mark our mothering success by our daughters' lengthening flight.

She's Seventeen!

Yes, we had a birthday week around here! IF you knew my DD then you would understand birthday WEEK. She loves birthdays (particularly her own) more than anyone I have ever known! Now, I just have to figure out how to cope with the concept that she is 17...

Cupcakes....

Written, January 2006

Today, being my oldest son's birthday, he requested brownies for his at-school-treat to share with friends instead of cupcakes. I thought, hey....cool -- I do a mean brownie! Well last night, I don't know how, but I really flubbed the brownies...they just didn't turn out right. Today I was too busy to start over as I had to have them at school at 11:30 a.m., an also have to bake cupcakes for tonight and clean my house for our dinner company that is coming to celebrate with us................so.............

I went by the grocery store and bought iced brownies from their bakery, brought them home and very lovingly placed them in my large "haul food back and forth to school" Rubbermaid container, (you know the one that screams THIS MOM BAKES AT HOME, LADIES!), and with even more homemade goodness sprinkled them with Sponge bob sprinkles and I was ready to enter the cafeteria! I even wondered if I should splatter some chocolate on my sweater?

Later in the afternoon:

Well now, I am back from school (of course, until I have to get back in the car in 1 hour 50 minutes to go pick them up again!)...and OMG, you aren't going to believe what happened....

Dear son and I hand out the brownies, to much adoration and admiration. Everyone was happy -- getting all caffeinated and sugared up for the afternoon (I know teachers must love this ritual)...and this little girl comes up to me and says....

"Are these home-made?"..........................LOLOLOLOL

Well, this being a Christian school and all, and me not being fond of lightning and such.... but also NOT about to say, "
No, sweet thing....they are made at the grocery store and probably from a mix to boot; and just to try to snooker you all and any of your over achieving Mama's, that might be around, I took them home and prettied them up for ya!"...I looked her in her cotton-picking, little beady, FoodTV watching eyes and smiled my brightest smile and without a flinch said...."Why? Do you like them?"

Am I going to Hell for this or will my tuition just get raised double next year?
