Culling

The definition of Culling: (verb) 1. to choose; select; pick. 2. to gather the choice things or parts. 3. to collect; gather.

Culling is a word I don't think I ever really used until the last few months.  Now it is a daily thought, at the very least.  I am literally in a season of culling within my own self and my own life.  I was underwater (not in a literal sense) for a couple of years until about 4 months ago.  I was living, functioning and feeling but always on the verge of drowning in something.  It was like my fight or flight mechanism was stuck on high alert - all the time.  Fear was my constant companion and I had no sense of purpose.  It seems, looking back over the last couple of years, anytime I thought I had a grip on something that was going to pull me from the black water I was trapped under, I was actually pushed further down.  I sank, sank and sank until I hit bottom.  My bottom came in the form of a perfect storm of events that aligned to draw me to the point of knowing something had to change.  It literally was break the surface for air or die.  Thankfully, God, led me up and out of the dark for that first breath of air.  At first everything looked foreign and faded, then as my mind, heart and soul began to clear it was like wiping water out of my eyes and colors started to return.  Laughing found a place in my world again, sleep returned, and fear lessened.  I finally felt strong enough to walk again.  My heart finally wants to feel and dance again.

Culling enters this picture because it became apparent to me one day that I had to begin to 1. choose; select; pick what I wanted for MY life.  It was also very clear I had to have the strength and fortitude to 2. gather the choice things or parts that were supposed to be in my life. I had to figure out what things, and more difficult, what people I needed to continue to have in my life.  Sometimes people are in your life for a season and when that season passes  they pass out of your life.  I am trying to draw near to the people God has for me and my life (the choice things or parts!) and I have not allowed anything less to remain. It hasn't been easy, as we get stuck with people and relationships. Our hearts get stuck with people even long after they have left your life.  I have had to work on my heart and teaching it to cull as well.  This process has brought me to number  3. to collect; gather:  and this isn't as easy as it seems.  I want to collect and gather only what makes me into the woman God created me to be.  I want to gather friends and relationships that are the best and only draw me near to God.  I need to be in a season of culling so that I can hear what God is calling me to do/be and that I can focus on being the Mother that I have struggled  (and failed often) with being.  My children deserve nothing less than a whole Mother who can love them fully and I can say I only want God's best for my life.

This culling isn't all deep emotional excavating, it also is moving through my life on all levels, from my closet to the car and everything in between.  I am emptying my life of things that don't "move the needle."  I am paring down on all levels...it makes it easier to breath. This life culling is a slow process and includes things that may seem silly from the outside.  I am seeking something and it is a long path, but I am committed to this culling, as painful as it may be at times, so that the regrouping and refocusing can happen. It seems that only through this process will I find peace and acceptance of the season ahead.

2014

Not my image, credited to Julie Tillery from Facebook
Personally, the last 2 years have been very hard. I was glad to see 2012 come to an end because we had been through so much with my DS2's illness, which changed my (our) world.  I had high hopes for 2013...hopes don't always bring results.  2013 has probably been my worst year thus far, and by now I have had a few to compare it to.

2013 saw me, for a time, have a crisis of faith which haunts me. I literally looked at my life, the devastation and destruction in it, and  I witnessed the person I thought was the strongest Christian I knew walk away from his faith, so in anger I said, "If this is what being on God's team brings, I don't want to play anymore!"   I was selfish and wanted to take MY toys and go home.  It was wrong, I sinned - there is NO excuse. I walked blindly through life for a while, without His light.  I know He was still there watching over me, but I was stumbling, falling and crawling on skinned knees without him. But like a child, I have come seeking the direction and hand of my Father and feeling His forgiveness.  The difference is, I feel like a baby now...having to learn to walk, talk and do most everything.  I am a baby in Christ right now, learning to pray, to seek His Word, to try to stay within his Will in Everything.  The above image is not my own, I saw it on Facebook and it spoke to me about the coming year....2014.  I am going to trust Him and His plan...knowing it is wonderful, knowing He thinks I am beautiful when others don't, knowing He loves me when others don't, knowing He cares what happens when others don't.  I am seeking His in 2014.

I know there will be pain in 2014 and in all honesty, I am struggling mightily with temptation as I enter this new year.  I am struggling against myself a great deal and fear is a constant battle.  But, I am determined to keep trying, to keep seeking my Savior.

May you experience blessings and joy in 2014.

Transparency, it is the question...

In this age of social networking and a great deal of "over sharing" I saw a post on Facebook last night by a  friend from high school and it was an honest, simple statement of her struggles that day.  It didn't fall into the woe is me "over sharing" and  full of drama, meant to draw attention category, rather it was just beautifully transparent.  It got my attention.  I didn't roll my eyes and think "why do people put their dirty laundry on FB" like I do so many times, it just made my heart hurt for her.  The difference is, I think she was being transparent, which is so very rare in this day in age (maybe always?)

With constant contact and social networking one might come away feeling that we are more transparent than ever but I doubt that.  Yes, people write things on Facebook, Twitter, etc.  that they would  never verbalize to others, but I think it comes down to what we do post as opposed to what we don't.  We, whether intentionally or not, paint an image of ourselves and our lives by what we do share (and trust me when I say some of us share just a bit more than we need to...if ya know what I mean!)

Our Youth Pastor is leading a study right now that deals with this topic which already had my wheels turning and then this post by a friend last night really got me to thinking about true transparency.  If I am being 100% honest, being transparent is not something I am comfortable with at all.  It is truly something I struggle with (whether online or in person.)  Not that I am the sneaky/untrustworthy not transparent type, rather I keep my heart very closely guarded.

I don't open up to people about my feelings and you will rarely know if I am having a bad day. I carefully cull the photos I share online to make sure they present me in the best light.  I share just what I want, when I want.  So in essence I am painting who I am online.  By not "over sharing" (heavens, forbid!) I have a lot of people who think they know me, and little by little I kind of start believing that is me as well, rather than just a little part of the picture.

That is the catch isn't it?  We paint a picture over a picture and eventually we may forget what God's original was intended to be.  In this age of social media we trick ourselves into thinking we are more open than ever, when really we are just creating a virtual image hoping it will carry over into reality.  It is something to ponder,  isn't it?

Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.
