In High Cotton...

My little man (DS2) and I visited a cotton field last week and had some cotton pickin' fun!

I grew up in the South, but not any where cotton was grown. Actually, the South I grew up in wasn't terribley agricultural at all, other than individual gardens. My grandparents always had big gardens but it was in no way farming so living in a part of the South where people still make their livings by farming is quite interesting for us. I am pretty fascinated by the crops and the big, monster machinery used for harvests, and so is my little man.  DS2 picking a huge bag of cotton and I practically had to drag him away.

  1. What a beautiful picture!
My mom's family is from Alabama- I remember the cotton fields so well. I was so excited to be moving back to the south to see those fluffy white fields again- its like Southern snow. I have yet to snap any pics, I am always afraid a farmer will yell at me :)

  2. I remember seeing my first cotton field. We moved south to Louisiana from New Jersey. Yes, quite the culture shock. We stopped in January by an already picked field and pulled off what was left in our shorts by the way. Snow to shorts in January, we knew it was going to be a good move.

  3. What a fabulous shot! We did have cotton here, but now we are too urban. When you drive around some of the rural parts, it's mostly tobacco and soybean these days.

  5. What a neat field trip! I hadn't seen cotton until my first trip to the beach in the off season which didn't occur until I was an adult. I am still pretty fascinated by this plant. Did you get any to use for decorating?

  6. Exactly what we did yesterday!!! We had our family portrait taken in the dreamiest cotton field I've ever seen in my life. It's something I've wanted to do for 3 years - the whole time we were trapped up north, I dreamed of when we could move back home to the South, and I could stand my fam up in high cotton for posterity. :-P

  7. What a great memory for both of you Michelle. I remember a few years ago when my mama and I were down south and we were on our way to meet some belles at the Cracker Barrel, we were on a back road and came across some cotton fields. I pulled the car over and mama and I got out to get a closer look. I'm sure the farmer said to his wife at the kitchen window "there are some Yankees out there looking at the cotton again".

  10. I lived in Arkansas for a couple of years. (My dad was in the Air Force.) And, there were plenty of cotton fields. It struck my as strange when, aster the picking, so much cotton seemed to be left on the stalk....and then it got so dirty. lol
