Appreciating the Aging Process

There are a lot of things about aging that I don’t understand. But there is one thing I have figured out the reason for, and it is the eyesight thing. Y’all over 40s know what I am talking about (don’t look like you don’t!!!) Hey, I was one of those who thought that whole “you turn 40 and your eyesight changes” stuff was a bunch of bunk….then my husband turned 40! The man who never needed any kind of glasses began to hold menus way out in front of him when we went out, he didn’t notice things right in front of his face…the list could go on and on and (but I am kind, and stuff, so I will stop there). Anyway, he started having to buy reading glasses to be able to do detailed tasks. Of course, at first, I didn’t understand this phenomenon (because I didn’t turn 40 near as soon as he did) and I didn’t really have any great appreciation for it…until…I figured out why it happens!


God, being a loving and merciful God, provided this little aging gem for our good! Yes, He did! He created this aging far sightedness to save marriages! YES! He gave us all a way to not be able to see how our partner ages in great detail! Heck, when these “over 40 eyes” come along you stop being able to see the crows feet staring back at you! IT is  a built in TV filter (like Martha has on her show)…but for the rest of us! So, the next time you lament how things aren’t looking as lovely as they once were… just remember the closer you stand the less your “over 40” eyes can see!

    LOL! This pair of 45 year old eyes need readers too. I decided to cave and buy a pair when I realized my arms weren't long enough. :)

    Funny you should come by this theory, because I just commented about this to my DH. He's recently begun wearing contact lenses (another one who can NOT believe his perfect eyes have failed him). He said "I can see you now. You were a blur up close before". Can I tell you how much I did not LIKE hearing those words. LOL

    I Like it :) I had to bite the bullet just last month and now I am wearing glasses. My first real clue was when the eye doctor ask me if I was still driving at night :/

    Old age also caused us to stop eating in candle light resturants, we need better light to see the menus.

    I've always professed that the day I turned 40 I went blind and immediately needed bifocals...now I know the reason. Thanks Michelle.

    So true. Whenever anyone my age or older tries to tell me I haven't aged, I am sure it's their diminishing eyesight! And that blessed farsightedness is totally God's provision to keep us--the Mister and me--looking good to each other.

    My arms have gotten shorter since 40, but at 50 I am still hoping I can put off glasses for a little longer...now, the silver hair? That's been here a while...for hubby, too!

    Great post! This is so true; I'm 41 now and noticed a very slight decline in my eye sight. Nothing serious or warranting glasses, but I find myself squinting at writing on the television, and sometimes enlarge pictures just to see details! I never used to do that. Scary thoughts!!!

    Love it! Now I understand why my husband thinks my 52-year-old can compare with those of magazine models! I thought it was just the eyes of love. Now I know he just can't see me clearly!

    Funny! Guess what, it happens even if you've worn glasses or contacts nearly your whole life! I started out with glasses at age 9; I've always been near-sighted. But in the last year or so (I just turned 40) I've noticed that I have to hold things farther and f1arther away to read the small print

    I will be 41 tomorrow. I am NOT loving the aging process but I am loving that I am more secure in who I am and that my husband is older than me! HA!
